On August 21, Academy staff attended a Congressional Hearing Health Caucus briefing and tour of the National Institutes of Health organized by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Other attendees included staffers from sixteen congressional offices as well from the House Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce Committees and other hearing-health associations.
Attendees received a briefing from Dr. Andrew Griffith, the NIDCD Scientific Director on the NIH and NIDCD internal research programs. In addition, attendees toured the Audiology Unit headed by Dr. Carmen Brewer and received a briefing on Dr. Brewer’s research on deep assessment of hearing and balance impairments.
Attendees were also able to tour the Translational Tumor Immunology Program headed by Dr. Allen who detailed his research on HPV-related head and neck cancer.
This event was a valuable opportunity to interact with congressional staff and raise awareness of the importance of NIH research on hearing and balance related disorders.
