Message from the President: Catherine Palmer, PhD | October 2019
There has never been a more important time to differentiate ourselves as the individuals who provide customization in hearing and balance care. If asked, can you clearly state why an individual should seek care from you and not online, over-the-counter, or in some other yet-to-be determined manner?
Sensorineural hearing loss is a chronic condition, yet the disruptive forces entering this area treat it like an acute problem and provide acute solutions (e.g., a device). Chronic conditions require chronic care and support to help individuals self-manage. By definition, chronic care is customized and that is exactly what an audiologist brings to the table, customization.
Among other things, we provide customization by matching technology to individual needs, we customize the physical and acoustic fit of technology, and we customize the counseling and auditory training required to make the best use of a variety of hearing solutions. Perhaps most importantly, we provide the essential ongoing care required to empower individuals to manage their chronic condition. We do this by not only having the most rigorous education in this area but by being the people who are lifelong learners and pursue continuing education to make sure we are providing our patients with the most up-to-date evidence-based care.
At the AAA 2020 + HearTECH Expo, where the largest group of audiologists meet, we connect, grow, and learn to make sure we are up to date and ready to provide the best possible care to our patients. You’ll notice a change in the name with the addition of “HearTECH.” Our exhibit hall now has its own name because it is now an education destination. You’ll find the important information you expect from our industry partners, but you’ll also find comprehensive learning, fresh ideas, and hands-on activities.
For individuals ready to change and enhance their practice patterns to differentiate themselves from out-of-the-box solutions, they’ll find support in HearTECH with colleagues ready to demonstrate and assist in mastering current best practices. The Future Hub (sponsored by HIA), located in center of the HearTECH Expo will provide provocative talks that will get you excited about our collective future in hearing and balance care.
All of us have information to share and AAA 2020 + HearTECH is a great destination to do this informally, but if you are ready to share information with a wider audience, you’ll want to submit your abstract (and the good news is the deadline has been extended to October 7!)
We continue to grow and evolve because of the amazing audiologists who have served as leaders in the profession, the classroom, the clinic, the laboratory, and in the world through their humanitarian efforts. Our annual conference is a time we come together not only to look forward but to celebrate the people who have paved the way. Please consider nominating your colleagues who deserve to receive the honors of the Academy. We don’t celebrate amazing people enough, this is our chance! The Call for Honors Nominations are due October 15.
I am looking forward to learning and celebrating with you at AAA 2020 + HearTECH Expo in New Orleans! Start planning your agenda and experience now and get ready for registration to open for all Academy members on November 4.
