Message from the President: Lisa Christensen, AuD

October 3, 2018

Welcome to National Audiology Awareness Month (NAAM)! October is a very exciting month for audiologists. Not only is it a time for celebrating our profession and bringing awareness to audiology but it is also the beginning of a new year for the Academy. The Academy’s Board of Directors will say farewell to Ian Windmill, Sarah Sydlowski, Holly Burrows, and Virginia Ramachandran. I greatly appreciate their volunteerism through their service to the Academy over the past three years. I would also like to welcome to the Board of Directors this year Angela Shoup, Samuel Bittel, and Kari Morganstein as new members at large, as well as, Catherine Palmer as our new president-elect.

Not sure how to celebrate NAAM? Don’t have enough time to develop materials for NAAM? Please go check out all of the materials the Outreach Council and its committees, as well as Academy staff have created for NAAM. These resources will help you raise awareness of the field of audiology locally. New this year is an awareness video that will allow you to showcase audiology plus many more tools for reaching the media, consumers, and health-care providers. Also, do not forget to change your Facebook profile picture to use the NAAM frame.

Hopefully all of you were watching this past Sunday morning when audiology made national news on CBS Sunday Morning. The nationally syndicated show took a deep dive into the world of hearing aids and audiology. I am extremely proud of this national exposure for audiology and how CBS Sunday Morning handled the story. It was wonderful to see CBS use the word ‘audiologist’ several times instead of hearing health-care professional. I was also pleased to see the expo hall from AAA 2018 in Nashville several times during the episode. It was exciting to see some of my favorite audiologists learning and interacting with our manufactures while in Nashville this past spring. CBS also provided a link for the Academy’s ‘Find an Audiologist’ webpage for consumers looking for more answers to their hearing needs on their website “guide to hearing aids.”

And if all of this wasn’t enough for you, get ready for the hearScreen USA App Launch in DC at The National Press Club on October 10! Academy leadership will be in attendance along with audiology advocate, Shilo Harris, who will be the keynote speaker. If you cannot attend in person, watch for recaps and pictures from the Academy. Also visit to sign up as an audiologist prior to the launch so that consumers will be able to find your audiology services.
