I love audiology! As do many of you! We are scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, and, above all, health-care professionals. We have chosen this profession as a vehicle to help people. For several years now, audiology has been recognized as being among the best careers in the country. The positive press notwithstanding, all is not perfect. Our professional value is challenged on a daily basis, and reimbursement rates lag well behind the pace of costs. These are opportunities disguised as problems.
Opportunities for addressing our professional value include:
- Rejuvenating our profession as advances in science and technology make available newer and better solutions to hearing and balance problems.
- Moving evidence-based audiology from research laboratories to clinics.
Opportunities for closing the gap between cost and reimbursement include:
- Delivering audiological services more efficiently through the use of automated test procedures, audiology assistants, and teleaudiology.
- Gaining direct access to audiologists for a leaner and more efficient health-care system.
These opportunities do present challenges that are not easily addressed. Nonetheless, we must take the first steps to embark on this journey. I look forward to celebrating our professional successes and representing your needs in grappling with the issues we face.
